In 1808, Carlos IV abdicated. His son became the new king, Fernando VII.
On 2nd May 1808, an uprising in Madrid led to the War of Independence against France. Under Napoleon Bonaparte (the Emperor of France), the French army had occupied Spain.

After the war, the king Fernando VII came back. He established an absolute monarchy and persecuted the Liberals, who wanted to control his power. Fernando VII wanted his daughter to govern the kingdom afer him, so he changed the Law os Succession. His brother, Carlos, did not agree and demanded the throne. After Fernando's death in 1833, the First Carlist War began between the Carlists (absolutists) and the Isabellines (liberals) and ended in 1939 with the victory of the liberals when Isabel II was proclaimed Queen.
